When one of those children grows up to be a writer, then the laws of physics bend a little. It is no longer an arrow which is the point, but the wind itself.</p>
<p>In his magnificent second novel, <em>Love and Shame and Love</em>, Peter Orner proves he is one of the finest American poets of family weather. This is as it should be.</p>
